What to wear golfing in Thailand: dress code, heat, and what gets you turned away

Almost every golf course in Thailand has a dress code, and being turned away at the pro shop on your first visit is a rite of passage nobody enjoys. The rules are simple once you know them — and dressing for 33°C heat is its own skill. Here's exactly what to wear so you look right, stay cool, and never get sent home to change.

The one rule that matters: a collared shirt

If you remember nothing else: wear a shirt with a collar. Polo shirts are the standard. Round-neck t-shirts, tank tops, and sleeveless tops (for men) are refused at most courses, and a surprising number of driving ranges enforce it too. Women can wear sleeveless collared tops or golf-specific sleeveless designs — those are fine at nearly all courses.

Bottoms: shorts are fine (this is Thailand)

Unlike stuffier clubs abroad, tailored shorts are completely acceptable and sensible in the heat. What's not: gym shorts, football shorts, denim/jeans, cargo shorts, and swimwear. Women can wear golf skirts, skorts, or tailored shorts/trousers. When in doubt, anything that looks like proper golf or smart-casual attire passes.

Shoes: soft spikes or trainers, not slides

• Golf shoes (soft spikes) are ideal — many pro shops rent them for ฿100–300
• Clean athletic trainers are accepted at most non-premium courses
• Banned everywhere: sandals, flip-flops, slides, and metal spikes
• For a driving range or simulator, trainers are totally fine

Dressing for the heat (the part guides skip)

Thai golf is often played in full sun at 30–35°C. Beginners who dress in heavy cotton suffer. Wear light, moisture-wicking polyester polos — the same ฿300–600 sports shirts sold everywhere here work perfectly. Add a cap or visor, sunglasses, and sunscreen; the round is 4+ hours of exposure. A small towel and an extra shirt for the back nine are worth it.

What it costs to kit out (budget vs branded)

• Budget starter: polo ฿300, cap ฿150, trainers you already own — under ฿500
• Mid: 2 wicking polos + shorts + a visor — roughly ฿1,500
• Rental golf shoes at the course: ฿100–300 per round
• You do NOT need branded gear to play — courses care about the collar, not the logo

Sun protection is not optional here

Many Thai golfers wear arm sleeves, wide-brim hats, and even face covers — not fashion, survival. UV arm sleeves (฿100–200) let you wear a short-sleeve polo while protecting your arms. If you burn easily, play afternoons when rates drop and the sun softens.
